SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
VISIT CALIFORNIA
A custom fragrance experience inspired by California’s 12 regions. Guests explored the Golden State through scent and created a personalised perfume to take home.

CALIFORNIA, BOTTLED
How do you introduce a destination through scent?
For Visit California’s event at the Sydney Opera House, that question became the starting point for a custom fragrance experience. We wanted to translate the character of California’s regions into a perfume bar guests could explore.
The concept invited guests to create their own Golden State scent, a personal interpretation of California, bottled as a keepsake of the evening.
Twelve regions, twelve fragrance directions
California offered a varied creative starting point: Pacific coastline, desert landscapes, mountain air, forests and sun-warmed valleys.
The fragrance concept was organised around the state’s 12 regions, each with its own name and creative direction. GLOW reflected the sunny glamour of Los Angeles County. COAST drew on San Diego County’s relaxed coastal character, while CRISP took its inspiration from the alpine landscape of the High Sierra.
Elsewhere, HAZE represented the San Francisco Bay Area, MISTY referenced the North Coast, and WILD evoked Shasta Cascade.
These regional identities gave guests a way into the fragrance experience. They could approach the collection through the places that interested them and the scent profiles they enjoyed.
The fragrances were developed to interpret each region’s mood and character, with a collection designed to work together for blending.
Creating a personal Golden State scent
The experience brought destination discovery into the process of choosing a perfume.
Guests could explore the California-inspired collection and combine fragrances to create something personal. Our team guided the experience, helping guests understand the choices and find a direction they liked.
That personal choice was central to the concept. California was the shared inspiration, while each guest could take a different route through it.
For a travel industry and media event, this offered a hands-on way to engage with the destination story. The regional names and scent descriptions gave the experience context, while blending gave guests an active role in it.
A custom perfume bar designed around Visit California
The visual presentation carried the concept across the activation. The artwork extended from the bar frontage to the fragrance dispensers, perfume bottle labels and supporting signage, including an arched scent menu and California panel.
Together, those elements connected what guests saw, read and experienced at the bar. The regional fragrance names formed part of a wider destination story, and the personalised bottles carried that story beyond the venue.
Creating the experience involved close collaboration on the scent direction, artwork and presentation. Visit California and Gate 7 shaped the destination narrative, while Unique Parfum brought the fragrance experience to life.
A new way to experience a destination
This project shows what is possible when a perfume bar is developed around a specific creative brief.
A destination offers a rich starting point for fragrance: landscapes, atmosphere and the associations people bring to a place. By turning those ideas into something guests can explore and personalise, a brand can give its audience another way to connect with its story.
At the Sydney Opera House, California’s regional diversity became the inspiration for an experience guests could take home in their own perfume.
